what do these lovely (well, mostly lovely) ladies have in common??

and these

oh yes….they are all wearing leggings.

black leggings.

much like the ones i bought for myself at American Eagle yesterday.

y’all. i’m so not even kidding.

i am still not even sure what i was thinking. i tried them on because the 14-year-old girl who was working at the Hillcrest store told me that they’d look great with this itty bitty mini-skirt and ballerina flats.

(after she called me Ma’am)

and for some bizarre twilight-zone-like reason, i believed her.

and i bought them.

sweet jesus. what the hell do i do now?

self-help group for people in the wrong decade?

buy the coordinating pieces and admit that along with the skinny jeans and the grey jeans…i can now officially be on the OC??

  1. I took one look at the pics, and though “cute, I gotta get over there”. I am 39, I bought the skinny jeans, should I just buy my ticket back to the eighties and buy stirrup pants as well?

  2. All I know is that I was walking through the high achieving private school where I work, and I kept feeling a sense of deja vu. Seriously.

Personally? Not into it. You know, the eighties called, they want their leggings back, and all that.

  3. I’ll admit – I bought the full outfit last year – flats, shortish jean skirt, and yes, leggings. What came over me??? Who knows. And, then I saw the cutest leggings on sale in July – and they have like a little tattoo thing on them (sounds tacky, but not so much).
And, now none of it fits.
    But, I like that look.
As long as you don’t decide to cut your bangs and then use a curling iron to make them super poofy with tons of aqua net you’re good.

  4. I know I shouldn’t love it, but it’s so so cute. I totally bent and bought the adorable babydoll dress and leggings this summer (the dress, which my husband promptly shrunk in the wash and now is no longer decent even *with* leggings. Sigh.)

Totally cute outfit! And with the super-sweet Abercrombie sweater, will be adorable for fall.

  5. You could be on The O.C., if it were still on the air. 😉

  6. Very cute! Forget the OC, with that outfit you could be on Gossip Girl!

  7. i don’t know… as 90’s as it is, I think it’s a cute look. If I could pull it off, i totally would. Instead, I live vicariously through my 8 year old 🙂

  8. Not that anybody will ever mistake me for anything but a walking fashion DON’T, but I do like the leggings under a mini-skirt look. But it strikes me as incredibly impractical for all but two or three months of the year. I mean, in summer it’s WAY too hot for black leggings (and the to-the-knee ones are just wrong no matter how poor your fashion sense) and in the winter, are you supposed to be barefoot in your adorable little ballet flats? I mean, the whole reason I’m so relieved to get back into full-length black tights in the fall is that I can wear my shoes without chafing barefoot in them.

    But maybe that’s just me.

  9. I bought leggings that looked adorable with this cute little size 6 dress that fit me for about one day. I have since given the leggings to MY Haley (Haley-O probably would have stretched them a bit at that time) and the dress to my niece.

As for the flats, in case you missed this one:

It’s about “the shoes”…the leggings are gone, the dress is gone, but “the shoes” are still the best things I’ve ever put on my feet. And talk about a good friend…I let my friend borrow them last weekend!

  10. Ali i’m sorry but you didn’t seriously buy leggings did you? yikes. wrong decade. wrong look.

  11. OMG… this is too funny! I wore that EXACT outfit to work yesterday (with totally cute sweater from Urban Planet). I’m WAY older than you Ali and I looked so cute in it (my 16 year old even confirmed it – on her own)…you can totally pull it off too. And take a picture so we can see you in all your cuteness.

  12. Oh…and by the way whatever you do, dont wear those flats with bare feet all day and then take your shoes off at your desk while you’re eating your lunch. I’m just saying.

  13. This year is Temptation for Redemption, in which all the things you wore in the ’80’s and then died about wearing in the ’90’s can come back around and you can make peace with the past. Really, it is like in vivo therapy.

  14. I quite like the leggings look. I think you’ll pull it off nicely! 🙂
Make sure you post a pic of you in your new outfit!

  15. hey, don’t knock it – i own black leggings and a denim skirt and ballet flats. and have worn them all together. 😛

  16. Ha! I have that skirt. From American Eagle. Not Abercromie and Fitch. Because, as I’m sure you’re aware, AE and AF are NOT the same store. Abercrombie obviously has way cuter hoodies.

  17. You know you’re getting old when…..
the clothing that was cool when you were in elementary school is making a come back…HELP US!!!!! Isn’t the fashion circle longer than that?

  18. I say, why not Ali? You’ll look great! And, you’re still young. You can pull it off. Besides, I think it’s kinda demure…you know, no more massive 4-inch f**k me shoes and sheer nylons. I like this look 🙂

  19. Honey, if you can rock that outfit, more power to you. Wear it every day!

  20. My friend has a fashion rule i swear by…if you wore it once in your lifetime already (in my case, it was the 80s), you can’t wear it again.

that said, i too have been sucked in and bought clothing that would be absolutely adorable and appropriate for a 29something, got home, and thought “what the heck was i thinking?”. plus, i will see others out wearing highly age inappropriate outfits and in my head i am enacting the dialog of the fashion police on the back pages of US magazine, so I am fearful of being the object of such ridicule.

Growing older sucks. Then again, i look at the women (albeit models) in the Eileen Fisher ads, look at almost any picture of Helen Mirren, and I think, it’s not so bad AND it can be done with style. Just not the style of days gone by.

  21. Well, you ARE slim, so I have no doubts that you can carry it off.
