since i really don’t want to talk about exits…and the fact that Brandon had to make his last night on American Idol…instead of Sanjaya…i’m devoting my thursday thirteen this week to some of the best entrances on-screen.

1. Jaws – The Shark. an hour and twenty minutes into the film, the shark makes his full entrance, scaring the crap out of everyone, prompting the ever-famous like, “you’re gonna need a bigger boat!”

2. The Silence of the Lambs – Hannibal Lecter. Dr. Lecter stand at attention, his eyes are dead. he urges in a slightly mocking tone, “closer, please. closer”

3. Scarface – Elvira. Michelle Pfeiffer descends from the elevator and slinks through a crowd of gansters.

4. Jurassic Park – T. Rex. The question of “where’s the goat?” is answered as the camera pans over T. Rex, gulping down the goat in a single swallow.

5. Field of Dreams – Shoeless Joe. “Daddy, there’s a man out there on your lawn”

6. Batman – The Joker. When Joker makes his first appearance in her new form, he steps into the light and says, “Jack is dead my friend. You can call me… Joker!” and then shoots his boss repeatedly.

7. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory – Willy Wonka. Willy, a limping, cane-using old man, disappoints the crowd, until he stops, drops the cane and does a somersault.

8. Psycho – “Mrs. Bates” perhaps one of the most famous scenes in movie history. the piercing music. the knife. the black shower curtain outline. still makes me scared to shower.

9. The Sound of Music – Maria. the hills are alive. and the scene is breathtaking.

10. Raging Bull – Jake LaMotta. in the opening scene, boxer Jake LaMotta is hidden under the hood of his leopard-skin robe and is seen warming up in an almost dreamy sequence.

11. Moulin Rouge – Satin. During the can-can, the screen goes dark and Satin descends from a flying, glittering trapeeze swing.

12. Star Wars – Darth Vader. the towering, face-less, heavy breathing dark lord of the sith, was a pure vision of evil.

13. Saturday Night Fever – Tony. iconic disco king of Brooklyn, walks down the street as “Stayin’ Alive” plays in the background
