i got many an email in response to my post on Fabulous this week, where i kinda-sorta-maybe knocked the chick flick a little. it’s not that i don’t like chick flicks…it’s just that they aren’t my first choice in movie. but there are some that i really like. so, i figured for my thursday thirteen, i’d prove it!

This was actually a hard list to make…because i came up with about 50. (maybe i like them more than i originally thought…)

ETA. i NEED to add a 14th in here. i can’t believe i left this one out!! Beautiful Girls may just be my most favorite of chick flicks!

1. The Notebook

2. Love Actually

3. Princess Bride

4. Wicker Park

5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

6. Steel Magnolias

7. Moulin Rouge

8. Dirty Dancing

9. Footloose

10. Bring It On

11. Bend It like Beckham

12. Garden State

13. Chasing Amy

  2. You know what? Of all your list I have only never seen Love Actually. All the others I saw (not necessarily enjoyed, but saw).

Of those, I’d say Eternal Sunshine is my favourite.

  5. I have seen many of those on your list. I LOVED Love Actually…….it was quirky and romantic without really rotting your teeth. I absolutely hated The Notebook……and its counterpart by the same author A Walk to Remember. Way Way Way too sappy and cutesy for me. Another universally loved chick flick that I absolutely hated, Titanic…..just plain stupid…..and lets just say Celine Dion’s singing in it did NOT help its rating for me one bit.

  14. Luuuhve!!!! #s 1 & 2! No. 1 is the first time I noticed Rachel Adams & liked her. As for LOve Actually- it was such a feel good movie. Rowan Atkinson was deliciously funny in his little role.I have seen Dirty Dancing a long long time ago, but I must have liked it. I have yet to watch Bend It like Beckham. Haven’t seen the others..Hey, guess what , my T13 is all the movies I watched in 2006!

  16. I think you can safely add your 14th, because I would assert that The Princess Bride is NOT in fact a chick flick. There are many guys who love that movie and can quote it all the way through…at least at my house!

  19. 1,2,3,7,8,9,10,11 are the ones that I’ve seen. I loved them all. Is Wicker Park really that good? I had no desire to see it. Seemed more like a thriller than a chick flick from the preview? I’m not the chick flick type myself. We always save them for rentals, like, if there’s nothing else available….

  20. I’ve recently become a fan of the chick flick genre, although I’m opposed on princple to the term. Your pick of beautiful girls surprised me since it’s so much about BOYS! My TT is up.

  21. I’d add one of my all time faves “Moonstruck”. Cher is awesome in it! My fave line almost ever is in it when Johnny says he’s falling in love with her and she slaps him and says “Snap out of it!”. Love.

I also loved “The Color Purple”. Tear jerker.

I could watch Dirty Dancing and Footloose a million times and never get bored…in fact I think I have!

  31. Princess Bride a chick flick? Hardly. The same can be said about Garden State. Why do you define those as “chick flicks”? Those are both amazing movies though.

On a different note, I read the book Hiding Edith due to your review. It was fantastic. My mom is the librarian at Hillel Torah and she donated it to the school. Thanks for the tip.

  32. Chick flicks are not my first choice either. But I did watch “Pretty Woman” for like 20 times. It’s the Richard Gere thing. Loved “Princess Bride”, “Chasing Amy”, “Bend It Like Beckham”, and “Bring It On”. Read “the Notebook” that was a great book, but didn’t see the movie. So, I guess I do like chick flicks after all.

  33. You have a lot of great ones on that list. I love Love Actually, but it makes me cry so hard in that one part where the character is listening to Joni Mitchell and crying. I break down every time. It’s my #1 choice for movies to watch when I need a good cry.

  35. Aack! A day late, but not a dollar short. I LOVE this list; it’s super creative (Moulin Rouge? You go, girl!). I was thinking today of telling the Tour Manager that we ought to join NetFlix and start having movie nights once a week — you’ve given me a great list to start off with (assuming he won’t get up and leave in the middle!).

Happy … uhh… Day after TT?
