If there’s one thing my stepmom knows how to do around the holidays, it’s how to keep people fed and full. I’m not even joking. Holidays in the Mintz household start early in the am with a Starbucks run and end in the pm with white chocolate mousse cake or pumpkin pie and they are filled with delicious goodness throughout the entire day. (and don’t even get me started on the glass jars filled with festive peanut m&ms. Please don’t. It’s not pretty for MY ARSE.) But, the most wonderful meal that is served is the giant southern breakfast.

Eggs. Pancakes. Biscuits and gravy. Pumpkin butter. Oatmeal. Fruit.

Did I mention pumpkin butter?

It is A SPREAD. Trust me on this one.

It’s also tradition that I wouldn’t dare bring up to Canada and try to recreate. This meal doesn’t belong anywhere but in Grammy Doris’ kitchen. Breakfast never gets this good and fancy around here. Pancakes, maybe. (Pink ones once!) Cereal. Donuts. Eggs, occasionally. The word spread does not enter our breakfast lexicon.

It’s something I always look forward to.

It’s something I always enjoy.

And it’s something I always wear my elastic-waist pants for.

To enter, leave a comment letting me know if your family has a holiday breakfast meal tradition…for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Easter, Passover.

  8. No breakfast traditions, really. And now I feel left out.

Sometimes on Christmas my mom made eggs, and we warm up leftover prime rib from Christmas Eve dinner to have steak and eggs.

  11. We don’t have a lot of breakfast traditions for holidays either – unless you count mimosas with freshly squeezed juice. (Mmmm… mimosas…) I’m thinking now that we have kids, maybe we should start.

Oh and I’m only Jew-ish, so on Christmas I make potato latkes with smoked salmon. And caviar. (See? Jew-ish.)

  12. Being an Aussie I always loved the idea of thanksgiving. So I would gather 15 – 25 friends together and get everyone to bring a plate, we always had turkey but we also ended up with random items like meat pie (an aussie staple) and pavlova along with a pignata I know everyone wants to know why. We have no excuse except a bunch of dizzy tipsy adults with a stick is funny. Now living in the US I try to be traditional down to the succotash.

  16. Christmas morning my Mom makes this delicious breakfast casserole with eggs, jimmy dean sausage, cheese and a whole bunch of yumminess. When we walk in the house Christmas morning we can smell it in the oven. Heavenly. And then of course, there’s pie to top you off. Because who doesn’t have pie for breakfast during holidays?

  18. Christmas morning we open our presents at our house really early, which isn’t hard to do since the kids will NOT let us sleep in. Then we go to my in-laws house for a big breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, cinnamon rolls, juice. When we are so full we can’t stand it, the kids open the presents that the grandparents got for them. Always a great morning.

Now I do the same with my family – my father talks the recipes down the phone to me from Canada. Of course, Christmas here is usually celebrated in 40+C weather….eating a HOT-northern hemisphere type meal LOL…while everyone else is eating cold seafood at the beach!

We watch them open all their presents while my husband and I drink our coffee. The stash of new toys keeps them busy while I start cooking breakfast. 119. I usually make the breakfast casserole that you let set overnight with the eggs and bread in it. It’s so easy to pop in the oven in the morning and that gives me more time to spend with the family!

  120. We always have breakfast at my house Christmas morning! We invite my aunt and uncle, mom and dad, grandparents – and everyone sits down for a nice family breakfast and my 5 year old son gets to show off his gifts from Santa! This year we’ll have a new addition – I have a baby due in a week, so it will be a little more challenging, but definitely special! I’ll be out on unpaid maternity leave through Christmas, so I would LOVE to win this to help actually purchase our breakfast items. Thanks for the chance! Here’s crossing my fingers!! 🙂

  122. We like to make taffy apples during the fall. We dip them in caramel sauce, roll them in chocolate chips, sprinkles, or candy corn.

We give them away as treats for Halloween every year.

  124. We don’t really have a special breakfast for holidays but during the fall and winter months, its very common to find pumpkin bread or cake or donuts on the table!

  131. Holiday mornings and Sunday mornings are always a special morning. We have a big breakfast that varies from week to week as we each take turns picking our favorites! Now that we are older, we all take turns preparing the meal. We turn off the telephone, gather as a family, and share our stories, joke around, and spend quality time together.

  136. I am just done looking through your post and I fairly liked it. I had one or two doubts in the beginning of the article though, but I held on reading and I am delighted I did. Fine enjoyable post, blogger! Continue publishing and I’ll certainly be returning in the near future. Bless you and take care.
