April 23 10

Next week we take possession of our new home. Three thousand square feet of suburban goodness that I have only seen in pictures. But I just know that is it the perfect house. But, while real estate markets across the states keep tanking and tanking, the Toronto market is doing nothing but flourishing, so we strettttttttched to buy this house. Because we are what one would call HOUSE POOR, there is a good chance we will be living sans furniture for a while and will be making purchases slowly. There are so many things to purchase…couches, tables, TVs, rugs, artwork, office desks. And then there are the things you don’t even think about, like towels for guest bathrooms and mezuzahs for all the doorways.

Priorities, people. I visit websites and stumble things I like. I read magazines and tear pages out. I walk down the home section of Target and take mental notes of all things I want. I sit at dining room tables and get comfy on couches in furniture stores. I take pictures of things I like.

But because sitting on my ass and vegging is a big priority for me, second only to fresh breath, the first – and likely only – purchase we will be making will be family room couches and TEH TV for this here room….

(if you squint enough you can almost see what the room looks like)

I am thinking I want brown, and probably sectional. I sat in this lovely thing and I’m pretty sure I purred a little bit. It’s the perfect napping  TV watching couch.

(Imagine it in chocolate brown, if you will, with my lovely ass parked right in the middle of it.)

What do YOU think? Help a girl out here. Like it? Don’t like it? Have a different suggestion to offer up? I am ALL EARS on this one. Also…wanna help me find a rug to go with a chocolate brown couch. I will probably be able to afford it in early 2011.

  2. As someone who has been in the throes of home-decorating since I put my contract in last summer, I completely understand where you’re coming from! I LOVE the couch, and would be great for you guys… and have a few ideas for rugs that go with brown couches, but we need to talk accent colors, too. (I’m going with a brown/cream/orange theme with my living room, so my to-die for rug is conveniently at Pier1.)

  3. Darcey…we are doing browns, beiges, and different shades of blue throughout the house. (maybe some orange too, like a poppy color?)

  4. I like this one, but there are some out there where you can easily rearrange the configurations, my brother-in-law has one that does that and it is fantastic. Don’t know where he got it though. For area rugs, I Love LOVE my FLOR rug and Ikea has interesting stuff too! Best of luck – the new house looks great.

  5. I love that couch and the ottoman/table thingy! I have a brown couch and the light cat hair it very noticeable. So you might want to keep that in mind with Indy. Although, I don’t know if he really sheds.

  10. Crazy enough but my hubs and I own that very couch in chocolate brown. It’s a weird olivy brown color and I paired it with orange and sage green colors…lots of compliments on the couch and it is the BEST couch to cuddle or stretch out on.

  11. I highly recommend microfiber/ultrasuede! It wears so well and is sooo easy to clean.

  12. This is THE best sofa!

The photo is deceiving… it’s 125 inches long so there’s a ton of space. It’s microfiber, so you can just wipe off any marks. Crate and Barrel had a sale last fall, so that’s when we got it.

  13. I’d go with brown leather too, but that’s just my personal taste. I cannot WAIT for you to get the accent colors and take pictures for me! I’m re-doing my family room (we currently have dark blue leather in there and it is SO hard to find a carpet to go ANY IDEAS ANYONE?) and I wanted to put dark brown leather. Your walls are light, will you keep them that way and just pop color in the accents?
My friend is STILL trying to find a house in T.O and it’s a nightmare, the market is crazy .. and competitive and people are getting like 10% OVER their asking price!

  14. You won’t need beds if you buy that thing… you’ll be passed out on it every night. It looks COMFY!

I say go for it as long as you get chocolate and not the vomit gray in the picture.

  15. Love it love it love it! And the rug is not a problem….there are a lot of modern rugs, not too expensive that will work. Rugs are the only things I did in my house on my own and I was really happy with them!

  20. Love. Looks super comfy and stylish. There is only one thing I want you to consider: I bought chocolate brown couches 3 years ago. I was not the first to do so. How long will this trend last? And, do you care?

  21. as a professional (truly I am) – please just measure your room (and measure the sectional) before you make a purchase. Those honkers look smaller in the showroom than they really are. And brown is a good choice.

  22. LOVE the couch, gorgeous! We just bought an awesome brown / tan rug at Costco in Toronto for $89!!!! Everyone LOVES it and can’t believe how little it cost. It’s also VERY kid friendly.

  23. I’m totally ditto-ing Miss Kristabella: “I love that couch and the ottoman/table thingy!” I’ve always wanted to have an ottoman as a coffee table. That couch’ll be awesome in brown, but definitely not leather. It’s not as cushy and soft if it’s in leather.

I envy you starting off with a blank slate. I have a bunch of crap in my house to get rid off before I get to “blank-slate”-ville.

  24. Go with the brown leather.

But more importantly, we’re still having thanksgiving at your parent’s house right?

    Uh…just wondering.

  25. Brown leather sectional couch – that sounds nice, and it would be a perfect office for you to work in, too!

Comment by Avitable on April 26, 2010
  26. Great couch. We went with leather (small children who spill things) only to discover the smell made it more like a large chew toy for the dog (ARGH!!!!). Here’s the rug I have picked out, but you may feel free to get it if you like it.

  27. Hi, I saw that you’re going to the Photo walk in June in Atlanta. I was like “Hey, I read her blog!” and then I realized I haven’t read your blog since something happen to my bloglines and your blog wasn’t there anymore 🙁 So excited to “find” you again. I live about an hour from Atlanta. We have lots of friends and some family in or around Atlanta. Very excited about the photo walk. Congrats on the new house. How are you liking Atlanta compared to Toronto? Anyway, I love the sectional and browns are great. That’s what we have and it hides dirt well.

  28. LOOK AT THIS IN THE STORE FIRST!! I just bought this exact couch and the color online is shockingly different than what the sectional actually looks like. We bought the stone color and are swapping it out for the cocoa,… or maybe the chocolate. I am EXTREMELY torn. Brown would not have been my first choice, not that I think it won’t work, but it’s kind of scary for me. So my question is, if I’m going with brown, should just go all out and get the darker brown?? or the brown, brown?? Let me know what you do.

Other than the color, this sectional is awesome!! We ditched the ottoman that came with it and swapped it out for a leather one that is coffee table size and hinges open for hidden storage. LOOKS AWESOME!

  29. Oh… it occurred to me after my post that you may be looking at the Cindy Crawford one? The one I bought was from American Signature. Looks almost identical, but the seat cushions are stitched in. I went this route because a friend of mine has the Crawford one and is constantly having to shove the cushions back in place. I had a couch like that before and HATED it.
