September 5 08

this, friends, is my face, sans makeup. It took me a long time to get the make-up thing down…and yes, like a 6th grader, i still keep it all in a messy, messy bag.

over the years, i’ve discovered what i like. and i’m truly an easy girl to please. smashbox foundation, clinique powder, lancome hypnose mascara, MAC everything else. i’m easy. i’m a simple girl. i wear the same trifecta of eyeshadow every.single.day. but i’m okay with it. it works for me. it all works for me…

except when it comes to one thing.

my raccoon eyes.

you’re starting the see the resemblance now, aren’t you?!?1

HELP. i will pay anything to get rid of the BLACK underneath my poor eyes. I look like i haven’t slept in months or i’ve been beaten. or both. and i actually am sleeping these days.

(well, with the exception of last night when the combination of 1. my nasty-ass cold that forced me to drink coffee in the evening which soothed my aching, knives-in-the-throat BUT didn’t allow me to fall asleep until 2am and 2. Isabella’s hour-long SCREAMY, disoriented night terror while the husband was at hockey kept me up ALL night)

(do any of your kids get night terrors? Emily had them when she turned 3. and now Isabella gets them. just weeks after she turned 3. is this, like, a magic age? i’m telling you – these things are scary, scary shit)

anyway, back to my problem of the moment.

(speaking of problems…

guess what’s back?? and guess what i’ve already had two of?? and guess who is going to bankrupt herself at starbucks?? oh, um, hi…ME. that’s it, you hear it here. it’s going to be all Tim Horton’s for at least a month. or week. because i’m WEAK.) (also weird? yesterday they charged me $3.25 for a grande and today they charged me $5.05? huh?)

so HELP me.

recommend something for my sorry-ass looking under-eye areas.

please.

(also. on a completely unrelated note…NEVER take exlax. seriously…those girls in high school who popped laxatives for sport??! and by sport, i mean, because they had eating disorders…and don’t get me started on the girls who ate SPRINKLES…you know, like, the ice cream topping, and that’s it because it gave them the sugar energy they needed to make it through the day but very few calories. yes, they shared this information with me while i ate my dunkin donuts. mmm…dunkin donuts…heh. i’m all TANGENTY today, eh?? anyway, why anyone would willingly take a laxative is beyond me. because you’re all…hey, this totally isn’t working at all…and then??! HOLY SHIT. literally.)

hrm. have i scared you away yet?

also? my baby girl started nursery this morning. this is old hat for her..she went two mornings a week last year to a pre-nursery program.

last year first day of school:

so, Isabella shoved through all the crying kids this morning, barely said goodbye and was on her merry way. this kid LOVES school.

heh. same backpack!!

  1. Do I know of kids who get night terrors? No. Do I know of a 27 year old female who randomly gets them when completely stressed out (during her waking hours) and scares her sleeping fiance shitless? Yes. Ahem. Very embarrassing since I am, you know, NOT A CHILD!!! I have no cure. Although I’m sure quitting my job, winning the lottery and moving to a warm and sunny destination would help. If you find a cure, please let me know. My fiance and my neighbours will thank you.

  3. First, I just want to verify that you are removing your mascara/eye makeup with some type of eye makeup remover. You see, I had a room mate once who always looked sooo tired and one day I just said it: “Girl, do you use eye makeup remover?” Her response: “No, why?” Me: “Because your eyes look like Night of the Living Dead, let me help you.” And then she removed her eye makeup happily ever after, the end.

But if that doesn’t work (it doesn’t work for me – I need the concealer!!), I enjoy Clinique Line Smoothing concealer because it has pretty moderate to heavy coverage and really brightens my under-eye area.

I usually buy the shade lighter than the lady at the counter wants me to buy. By the time I put on foundation and powder, it doesn’t look as freakishly white – it just makes my eyes look bright and happy.

Ok, I think that’s enough for now.

Also, one of my best friends gets night terrors. I was sharing a hotel bed with her once and… never again.

So here’s the deal, I manage a Starbuck’s in my life outside of parenting THANK THE GOOD LORD I DON”T HAVE TO GO BACK!! but I must say I really REALLY don’t get the love of the Pumpkin Spice Latte. I just think a) it’s WAY too sweet and b) it’s just kinda gross… yet there is a large part of the population that LIVES for the shit. Don’t worry you are not alone, there are many other people out there that are willing to lose their house to feed their addiction… this one lady last year was coming in 4 times a day for a Venti CRAZY!! Let me tell you by the end of Pumpkins Spice season she had gained a few pounds!

  14. MAC! I heart MAC! Not that I have any MAC products, but I heart them.

So, the point now is that I LOVE that she has the same backpack for starters! I would never have been able to do that as a child, we were rough on our packs. Okay okay FINE… I used the same backpack on and off through high school… I alternated between packs. I really wanted a messenger bag though.

But I digress. For me, who is of the deepset eyes… I use powder. I mean, I use one layer around the eye area, patting motion and then blending it in. Then when it gets covered by the powder again (as foundation, I have mineral powder for makeup)

  16. I use two things for under eye circles. First I dab on some under eye concealer that has a yellow tint. I like Physcians Formula Magic Cube concealer. Because yellow and blue are opposite on the color wheel something that I don’t remember happens and bam, no more circles. Then, just for fun, I dab on The Body Shop Vitamin C Eye Reviver. It has light reflecting particles in it and smells yummy.

On to night terrors. My daughter had terrors from about 2 until 4. She would scream out at night and we would run in there and she was still sleeping. We couldn’t calm her and she couldn’t wake up. It was very scary. My husband got them as well. My son is 4 and he sleepwalks. He walks into the basement, turns on the lights, then comes back upstairs, comes into our room, and lays on the dog bad and sleeps there the rest of the night.

  17. I asked for pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks last friday….4 days before they were *supposed* to sell them, and the lovely barista actually sold one to me. And yes, it started a COMPLETE shit storm. And I giggled about it for hours afterwards because there’s nothing like starting a shit storm at 8pm on the last friday shopping day before school starts.
I like Maybelline’s Dream Matte Mousse for my dark circles, but it gives me zits because (apparently) I’m still going through puberty in my 30s. I think it’s CoverGirl that has a twisty concealer in a see through tube with a spongy applicator tip. You twist a tiny bit of the concealer on the applicator and dab under eyes. It’s awesome stuff.
Night terrors: My Grandmother used to have them. She swears by the old wives tales of putting a bible under your pillow, or a magnet between the mattresses. The magnet trick was her favourite. It’s weird, but she said it worked.

Anyhow, I love two products both easy to find at Shoppers – Revlon ColorStay (it has spf15 plus it’s greasy without oil – so it smooths nicely) and I also like smashbox concealer stick but it needs to be put on right after moisturiser in order to smooth without pulling (must not pull undereyes, I have enough crinkles). I’m also am trying Neutrogena’s 3-in-1 but verdict still out. BTW – you are no raccoon.

For adults we tend to put them on an antidepressant type medication which works wonders in easing the terrors. Any questions let me know – sleep disorders is what I do for a living.
