January 22 08

It took me about 6 weeks to read The Other Boleyn Girl. I really, really loved it. i swear. i did. if you know me, you know that i, like my good friend Kath, love me some British royalty, especially Henry VIII…but he has to look like this Henry

and not like this Henry

because good god, why did ALL those women swoon? why?

but alas, she was a long read…600 pages, i think…and when you read for a living, reading for, well, my own enjoyment is tough to do. but, on sunday, while i had a sick lethargic toddler glued to me, who wanted to watch nothing but the Piglet Movie…over and over and over, i had nothing else to do so i read Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild. in one sitting. i was fascinated. couldn’t put it down.

it’s the true story of Chris McCandless, a young man who gave $24,000 to charity, left his home, his car, his cash, his possessions and hitchhiked himself up to Alaska, where he decided to walk right into the wilderness, completely ill-prepared. He started his adventure in April of 1992, and was found dead in an abandoned bus that August.

Was he brave? or just stupid? are we supposed to be touched by his journey and the people he affects along the way or should we write him off as being a spoiled, rich kid who sealed his own fate by making foolish decisions. It’s tough to decide, really.

(ps. Sean Penn made the movie version of Into the Wild with Emile Hirsch. yum. It’s gotten fantastic reviews. i can’t wait to see it…but, it’ll have to wait until i’m done watching the last Die Hard…sadly..)

anyway…i’m now in a good reading groove. and i’m now looking for something new to read. Suggestions? What was the last great book you read?

-
  1. Into the Wild is next on my list;) I recommend the Outlander series, if you haven’t read it, by Diana Gabaldon. The first book starts out slow but once it gets going, they are all (6 so far) FANTASTIC and I’m still mourning the fact that I have to wait until 2009 to read the next one in the series…

  2. I just started reading “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini. I’m only a few chapters in but I can already tell I’m going to love it.

Some of my favorite books of the last few years include:
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon
My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

But I could go on forever with favourites on my bookshelves. If you’ve never read The Princess Bride, YOU SHOULD. It’s super funny.

  3. Atonement by Ian McEwan – it’s one of the best books I’ve read in that last 5 years. It’s our book club book this month, AND it’s at the cinema. I saw it last night and it was very true to the story.

My heart is like a piece of black, black coal, obviously.

  7. Oooooh, I love talking books! I even wrote a post today covering the last few books I’ve read.

Anyway, as per your request, none of these are British royalty novels, but my absolute favorite novel of all time is “Beach Music” by Pat Conroy. Other good ones I’ve read recently are “The Time Travelers Wife” by Audrey Niffenberger (by the way, I am NOT looking up the authors’ names here, so misspellings may occur) and “The Thirteenth Tale” by Diane Setterfield. Right now I’m reading “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime” by Mark Haddon, and I’m loving it so far.

  11. I just picked up The Other Bolyn Girl. Excited to read it — if I ever get time!

I’m reading Eat Pray Love right now and loving it.

Love in the Time of Cholera is one of my favourite reads. The movie’s coming out soon, too — so, now’s a good time to pick it up. The writing is so beautiful and poetic. It’s the ultimate romance….and it’s funny.

  17. I just finished Under the Tuscan Sun, and before that The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls – really great book. I just started something new by Joyce Carole Oates… Man Crazy maybe? Its started well but sometimes her stuff just gets irritating. I HATED We Were The Mulvanneys. Holy crap that book sucked.

ps – I decided today you are on my must read 1st or 2nd thing in the morning list. Thanks for writing Ali, I really enjoy your blog.

  18. Oh- I too read Into The Wild in a record short time – awesome book. The movie is playing near my house, I hope to get a chance to see it before it goes bye-bye.
And I have Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (I think), got it for a Christmas present, haven’t started it yet tho.

  19. Anything (and I really mean ANYTHING) by Jodi Picoult. I recommend starting with either Keeping Faith or My Sisters Keeper. You will get addicted to her writing though. I promise.

  22. I love British royalty! Who am I kidding I just swoon over any man with an english/irish accent! The Queen’s Fool and The Boleyn Inheritance are also by Philippa Gregory and are great reads. All of Robin Maxwell’s books are fab and not too long. Duchess by Susan Holloway Scott and A Rose for the Crown by Anne Easter Smith are must reads also. Can you tell I love historical fiction?

Comment by Tara on January 22, 2008
  23. “The Girls” is an amazing book. I read it and LOVED it.
I didn’t really like “Into the Wild”. I read it at university and got into a huge debate with one of my teachers about it.
Eat.Pray.Love was fantastic and I also loved several Jodi Piccoult books.
I read a LOT, but partly because I take the train every day. And, then I get into the books and find it hard to put them down when I get off the train.
I’ve started putting the books I read on my blog because I forget what I’ve read and then the covers change – and I keep buying repeat books, getting partway in, and then realizing I’ve already read it.

The Virgin’s Lover by Philippa Gregory.

  25. I guess I wouldn’t know what to think about him. My first thought is stupidity but I’m touched he gave money to charity. Sooo….I’m lost for words!

I just read Mary Higgins Clark “I heard that song before”. It’s okay, not one of my favs but I like to read humerous books like Janet Evanovich or romance like Lori Foster. So, I may differ on opinions.

Thanks for dropping by my blog…hope to see you back soon!

  26. I’m a regular lurker but I have come out to tell you about my favorite books.. both a must read both by the same author. The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. I’m sure you’ve heard of The Kite Runner since it just came out in theatres and there was a bit of noise around it about one of the scenes and the Afagan boys that were in it. I don’t want to spoil it but you should really read the books and then go see the movie.

  27. I just finished reading the His Dark Materials series (you know, The Golden Compass, etc?) and couldn’t put it down for a second. The books are just wonderfully written and highly entertaining.

  28. ‘Kay…fellow royalty lover here 🙂 Right now I’m reading Ken Follett’s World Without End which is kinda but not really a sequel to the equally excellent The Pillars of the Earth. both AWESOME books of historical fiction! Have The Kite Runner on my bedside table ready to go next. Oh! And I suggest anything by Edward Rutherford, if you like epic historical fiction. My faves are London and The Forest.

I am now going to have to read Into the Wild and the Other Boleyn Girl.

  39. I too enjoyed the Other Bolyn Girl, but more the content than the actual writing. I found that it was a story that could have used a lot fewer words.

My mom gushes over A Thousand Splendid Suns and my all time favourite is The Time Travellers Wife. I have a whole pile of books that I’m going to love to read, but classics for my French litt class and even more enthralling morphology articles for my linguistics class. Bleh.
