Me, forever ago: OH MY GOD! We have a to get a Keurig! It’s the best invention ever! It makes just one cup of coffee. It’s perfect! Since I’m the only one who drinks coffee and I only drink one a day…think of all the money we’ll save! And it’s so inexpensive too. A look at all the fun and exciting flavors of coffee! And you can even get this fancy carousel-type thing to keep your k-cups organized. This is seriously going to be the best thing since sliced bread, I’m telling you.

Husband, forever ago:

Me, not-so-forever ago: OH MY GOD! We have to get rid of the Keurig! All of the flavors in Canada taste like poop. I swear to you, there’s not one that tastes delicious. It all tastes like the coffee at the bottom of the pot. And don’t get me started on the temperature. I pour a mug of coffee and 19 seconds later the entire mug is freezing cold. If I wanted iced coffee, I’d go to Starbucks. (Mmmmm…Starbucks). Also, I drink, like, at least three cups of coffee a day and our nanny drinks at least three two and we are both at home all day and it doesn’t seem cost effective at all, does it? Also, let’s not even talk about the environment. Anyway, it was good while it lasted. At least we never bought that tacky carousel?

Husband, not-so-forever ago:

Me, today: OH MY GOD! I need a coffee maker. I am SO seriously over this Keurig business. And my husband is conveniently out of town so he can’t respond with his judgemental crickets.

Advice? Have a coffee maker you really love?

Quickly. I really hate crickets.

  1. I almost got a Keurig for all the reasons you listed and am glad we didn’t for all the reasons you also listed! We have this coffee maker: http://www.cuisinart.ca/cuisinart_product.php?item_id=271&product_id=322&cat_id=2 and I’m a fan – you can adjust “regular” or “bold” and it keeps the coffee really hot (which you can also adjust). It’s not super fancy, which is my favourite thing about it. Good Luck!

  2. This is such a good post! I am sorry, I don’t come with any useful advice, but at least I am warding off the crickets, so let’s call it a win, shall we? My husband and I are both hardcore coffee addicts, although I am more of a Timmy’s or Second Cup (don’t judge me) girl, and he is more of a Starbucks/independent coffee places downtown boy. We both have wanted a Keurig for a long time but our deal is NO MORE kitchen stuff until we buy a new house that has a kitchen with more counter space (not a reality in our wee downtown kitchen). Now you have made us (me) think twice. Can you sell your Keurig on ebay and use the proceeds to feed your Starbucks habit?

  3. Percolators make nice coffee fast and they are cheap.I got mine at an antique shop. It’s really pretty. But you can get one here. I also really like French press coffee.I have one that makes one to two cups only.

  4. Considering I only have coffee on the weekends, and Joe usually waits to get it at work, the Keurig is perfect for us. I really love it with the reusable k-cup, where we can use our own coffee grounds and not have to buy the individual packs.

But, to each their own. 🙂

  5. I’ve had this coffee maker for 6 years and LOVE it. It’s fab. Definitely one with a thermal carafe if you are going to be drinking it throughout the day.

  6. I know you don’t have a target, but I would recommend something like this: http://www.target.com/p/Hamilton-Beach-BrewStation-Plus/-/A-10610942. The reason I love it for home is that it takes me a few hours to drink a pot and it does not “burn” the coffee. LOVE this pot! At the office we have a Bunn, and if you’re drinking several pots during the day, this is the way to go. It keeps water in the reservoir warm so that the coffee comes out in about a minute and is HOT. I am kind of a freak about keeping small appliances unplugged because of fire danger, so the Bunn would not work for me at home. Good Luck! I’m glad you’ve confirmed my thoughts on the Keurig. I could not for the life of me figure out why people were paying so much money for coffee pots that only made one ONE?! cup of coffee, and where the little pods cost so much.

  7. I got a free Keurig which my employees and house guests absolutely love. I don’t drink coffee, but they swear by it.

  8. We had a Kering, oh what a sexy machine. Thats what sold us. We loved it for about a year. Too expensive and the coffee, not so good, even in the states. Went to a percolator just like mom had, no more fancy or sexy, just good hot coffee, no filters either! Best decision I’ve made in a while.

  9. My mother-in-law has something like this: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=delonghi+coffee+makers&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&prmd=imvns&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&biw=1179&bih=578&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=10456760519639679824&sa=X&ei=0pIyT9q0EIH50gHz5sXHBw&ved=0CIgCEPICMAo#ps-sellers

I don’t drink coffee, but when I have had it it has caused major stomach yuckies for the most part. Except in my mother-in-law’s coffee maker!!!

  10. I have no recommendations. I have a cheap coffeemaker and it sucks. Spend the money on a good one because the cheap ones even make good coffee taste like ass.

  11. My French Press. I LOVE my French Press. I think it makes the best coffee out of all of the pots I’ve ever owned or used (Bunn, Cuisinart, Mr. Coffee…) When I’m feeling frisky after I grind my beans, I throw in freshly grated nutmeg, cinnamon, and a dash of ginger to have a spiced coffee.

  12. My cheap-o Mr. Coffee from Target works better than my Tassimo ever worked.

Oh, sorry. You don’t have Target. *snicker*

  13. We drink about a pot a day and we LOVE our Bunn
    http://www.bunnathome.com/products/velocity-brew/velocity-brew-nhbb
I think they are around $150 or so… they are the kind that Tim Hortons sells, so if you buy it from Timmys, it has their logo on it, but they are a little cheaper.
Makes a pot in, literally, 2 minutes. Super hot because it has a tank of hot water in it – so when you pour the water in, it just displaces the hot (which is why it can brew so fast). They have amazing customer service and warranty. Like if in 6 years the water starts leaking out the bottom, you package it up (minus the pot and filter basket) put it in the mail and two or so short weeks later a brand new machine is delivered to your door. True Story. We love ours and will never have anything else (if possible) because I can’t stand the idea of waiting gahhh 20 minutes for a pot???

  14. I second the Hamilton Beach one from above. We are not HUGE coffee drinkers, (I get it on my way to work), but on the weekends we normally make a pot. My favorite thing about it is that as soon as it starts brewing, you can start pouring. Plus there’s no carafe, which I would ultimately damage one way or another. Good luck finding the right fit!

  15. I could never EVER have a Keurig at home, because we have one at work. So to me, Keurig = work coffee. AND I HATE IT.

I make coffee in my old-fashioned coffeemaker every single day. We have a Cuisinart one, I have no idea what model it is.

    DOWN WITH KEURIG!!!

  16. I heard the Nespresso are wonderful, expensive but versitile for coffee (you can buy a filter and use your own coffee or buy their expensive little pucks .. yes, pucks 🙂 but at home I use my Hamilton beach since I want more than one coffee in the morning.
Also bought my husband a Tassimo, the lattes, cappucinos and hot choc. are great, as is the coffee bu they are expensive

  17. We just got a Keurig at work, and I was so excited, but I also find the coffee tastes terrible. It seems I’m not alone. I use a french press at home and would highly recommend it. There is a little more clean-up involved, but it is worth it.

  18. I’m still laughing from your reply this morning…you were much more graphic in your description of coffee available in Canada. 😉
I’m also laughing because I too soooo needed a Keurig. Best invention ever. Look Honey, we can make coffee (for you) and tea (for me)! Since my addiction for all things David’s Tea kicked it into high gear (I have over 50 kinds! It’s bad!!) I barely use the damn Keurig. Now our counter has a Keurig for quick or evening coffee, a coffee maker for Hubby to make his coffee for work and a variable temperature kettle for me. I have NO counter space to begin with, it’s almost comical now.
BTW, I do tend to order coffee directly from Keurig…usually Caribou or Wolfgang Puck. I have no idea what the later tastes like, I just like the packaging. 🙂

  19. Ok. Hands down….a french press makes THE BEST coffee; if you use good beans of course. In second place comes the percolater and in third and in my opinion, a Mr. Coffee makes coffee just as well as coffee as an uber expensive Bunn (they do look cool though! )

  20. The last coffee maker we bought was cheap, and it sucked. I finally threw it away in a fit of bad-coffee-induced anger.

But then we didn’t replace it, so now I am stuck with instant coffee (oh my gosh – someone please save me from the instant coffee!!)

Clearly I am of no help in choosing a coffee maker.

  21. I second the Cuisinart recommended above. I got mine at London Drugs or Superstore (can’t remember!), and LOOOVE it. I think it was about $80. Pot never drips from the spout which is my coffee-maker pet peeve. Your post has saved me from wasting my money on the cute Keurig. I secretly was feeling behind the times and wondering if I was missing out. Also, best coffee ever – President’s Choice Great Canadian! Seriously, Starbucks has nothing on it….My Greek friends swear by Nescafe Frappe instant coffee, which is really quite good and has taken over Greece, but not available for purchase in Alberta, apparently!

  24. IMO, you should buy a Mr Coffee coffee maker for about $30, and a really good carafe to put the coffee in after you brew it. Then it won’t taste burnt, but it’ll stay flavorful and hot all day. I did that about a year ago, and it’s changed my life. Really. Good luck!

ps. I too, am glad that you never bought the tacky carousel thingy;-)
