oh yes, the dog story. and how we almost ended up with one… (and still might!)

growing up in my mom’s house, there was always a dog. and it was always a miniature schnauzer. the ugliest of all dog breeds. and clearly not the brightest either. we had those dogs that didn’t know their asses from their heads. they walked into walls. we even had one that used to pee itself every time a man came within 10 feet of it. scouts honor, i’m not making this shit up.

i hated them. all of ’em. and their stupid names…smoothie, smokey, ben, pepper.

and then my dad got himself his Roxee.

and she’s pretty much the most amazing dog ever. she’s also the most spoiled. she gets her teeth brushed twice a day, and brushed three times a day. she’s my dad and stepmom’s baby.

and she eats an apple more politely than my children…

and we love her. but, we still aren’t DOG people. we are the fish-having kind of family. they are relatively little work. they don’t get stomach bugs or cancer or need to be walked. and they are fairly easy to replace when your kids aren’t looking. there’s no shortage of these in this world.

but then my cousins got themselves a shih tzu, Harry Potter, and it was instant love.

for all five of us. i mean, i’m NOT a dog lover, by any means. just ask my friends Jack and Ilana how many times i’ve gone near their Jazzy (um, none). but this dog?? i was on the floor, playing with it. cuddling with it. cuddling! me! with a dog!

(shit. i am a dog lover)

(a dog!)

apparently, my stepmom needs us to have one.

and i don’t think she’s going to stop until she gets us our very own Harry Potter…although ours would have a much better name. i mean, she was on the phone with my cousin getting his breeder information and everything.

and she’s even got Isabella working for her cause..

so…let’s just say, for the sake of saying, that casa de Martell is getting a dog. what is the BEST dog name you’ve ever heard? What should we name him? her?

-
  1. I’m partial to the name of my now deceased(but while living absolutely wonderful) dog, Maddie. Maddie was her nickname. Since she was born with a cross on her chest, we named her after my great-aunt, a Carmelite nun named Madeleine. So as not to be excommunicated (or struck by lightning) we told everyone she was named after Madonna (this was during her Like a Virgin era after all).

  2. The dog paragon for me was my collie/lab mix that I grew up with, Molly. Very common but it brought back all sort of happy memories. Then I met another Molly, a cocker spaniel. This Molly was just such an asshole that it ruined the name for me. We have three cats (Rufus, Zoe and Marley) and a fish (Daphne/Velma), but I would love a dog, and I think the greatest dog name is “Waylon”.

Comment by Jenn on July 8, 2008
  3. It would have been better if your stepmom named the dog Hairy Potter – much more clever!

And if you’re going to get another shih tzu, I recommend Shia LaWoof.

(I have a kitty named Leonardo DiCatrio. I am an odd duck.)

  5. My husband had a Lab named Beauregard, they called him Bo for short. I liked that name. My Mom’s family dog was named Baroness. I guess I have a thing for dog names that start with B

  11. Each dog has its own personality – you should pick a name that fits your individual dog – a calm, gentle dog doesn’t exactly fit the name Sparky while a hyper dog wouldn’t exactly be right named Snuggles – I tend to like “people” names for pets. I have a friend with a turtle named Bridgett which cracks me up.

Which ever name you come up with I’m sure your family will love it!

Congrats! (And welcome to the club!)

  13. Our dog is Freddie but we call him Fred. It’s actually a perfect name for him since he acts just like an old man, sitting at the fence and yelling, “Get off my property” in his old man doggy bark.
Our neighbors have two teeny tiny little chihuahuas named Cowboy and Brutus. When they first got Cowboy, he wouldn’t take walks so they dragged him around on his little chihuahua hiney.
My husband has had a lifelong ambition to get two identical dogs and name them Yep and Nope. Anything for a funny.

They way she chases after, and hugs, every dog she comes across has made it pretty clear that we’ll be getting a dog at some point in the future.

And his name will be Luke Peoplewalker.

It must be the schnauzer in him, he’s named Jesse – like the name, the dog really gets on my nerves though! He always wants to jump all over me. If you can tell from that statement, I am NOT a dog person either. Husband insists we will have one one day though.

They are the most fun, caring, kid-friendly dogs. And oh-so-cute! My family and I have had about 15 over the years, and everyone has been an absolute gem.

It’s the best of both worlds – girly enough for me and manly enough for my guy (our dog is named after a beer! look how manly you are! ignore the fact that your dog has a dress on!) (I’m kidding, my dog doesn’t wear clothes.) I’m currently trying to convince my guy that Stella needs a little brother. If I win this argument, there will be a Willie Nelson added to our family.

  40. Okay, so listen. When I was growing up, I always wanted to name a dog “Kitty.” Then I could call, “here, Kitty, Kitty,” and a dog would come running. For some reason I thought that was the funniest thing in the world. Sigh.

Then, when Mike and I decided to get a dog, we settled on the name, “Tequila.” What were we, 19 year old fraternity bros? Sheesh.

Luckily, when we went to get our dog, we took one look at her and said, “You are not a Tequila. You’re a Rigby.” Rigby, like “Eleanor Rigby,” the Beatles song. It suits her perfectly.

You can have names picked out, but in the end, you won’t know until you see the dog.
