As we filed into row c to take our seats at Emily’s end-of-the-year hip hop recital, we caused a bit of a ruckus trying to fit both Isabella and her giant tutu skirt into the small theater seat.

“Picking your battles, eh?” says a mom two rows ahead.

“You bet.”

“She looks just look one of those girls on Ellen.”

“That’s exactly the look she’s going for, actually. She doesn’t take this thing off.”

“There was a child in our school who wore a full evening gown last week. The teacher thought the sequins were a little over-the-top for senior kindergarten.”

“You know,” I said, pondering Isabella asking to go to school in full glitz. “I would let my daughter wear the evening gown too. She’s only 6. Her bum is covered. She is out the door on time in the morning with a smile on her face. And, honestly, it’s the one time in her life that she can wear a sequined gown or a gigantic skirt during the day and people think it’s cute.”

“TRUTH.”

  1. If I had a skirt like that, I’d wear it everywhere.

  2. Don’t think I haven’t tried to steal it…

  3. I totally agree.
I don’t even see it as picking a battle really. I think it’s cute, and I encourage it because I know one day she won’t wear frilly stuff (maybe).
Chloe starts Junior Kindergarten next year and I see a lot of frilly skirts and tutus in her future.
My rule is that she has to be able to use the washroom all by herself which rules out a few of her ensembles.

  7. Still love that shot of her and her father – I think it’s the pink.

That woman though? THat’s awesome it wasn’t that SNARKY “pick your battles, huh?”

  9. I adore the first photo. ADORE it. Pick your battles for sure. The evening gown would be a funny one. But hey, my son wore a panda costume for all of March & April.

  11. My daughter loves her pink tutu… .and loves it when I wear the matching one. She gets upset when I don’t want to wear it running errands, going to dinner, etc… It’s really funny to see us both around the house with huge pink fluff!

  12. Perfect. You’re doing the right thing.
Ugh, clothing battles with a 6 yr old, pointless!

  14. This made me think of Joanne Wallace who wears a ballgown every Wednesday and even though she’s an adult, it still makes me smile. I think that we should all wear whatever it is that makes us feel good. 🙂

  15. I am shame-facedly admitting that I have a black mini-crinoline from a halloween costume that almost looks like a tutu and sometimes I just put it on and wear it around my bedroom.
    Because I can.
